Fear is both real and a false illusion. But how can that be?
When fear is real, it is because it is “believed” and that belief changes your mind and alters your bodies chemistry and invokes the sympathetic nervous system to release the chemical known as Cortisol (aka the stress hormone). The limbic system, and one specific part of it, the Amygdala, is the second oldest part of the brain. It was created in the cave-man era when the fear of the saber tooth tiger or some other predator was an every day reality. This function of the brain never went away but did adapt and convert into 1,001 new modern day fears. The fear of flying, fear of heights, fear of spiders, fear of being robbed and fear of public speaking. But the issue is that Fear and our decision making ability is ignited by far more situations than these common ones, such as Fear of losing your status or autonomy, the fear of failure, the fear of what people will think about this or that, or simply speculating that an issues is not being dealt with fairly even though that may be a totally biased view and not true at all. You see, the Amygdala, does not evaluate where the emotions your feed it are well founded and based on reality, so if in fact it’s your imagination worrying over-time and truly an illusion this does not matter. The Amygdala will still send off the stress hormones and potentially cause you to act in an irrational manner.
Quite some decades ago, somebody in media and advertising and then programming and movies learned that fear was a human activating system, so they used in in commercials, programming and content in order to make sales because humans have been hard-wired for fear for thousands of years. It’w quite formulaic and predictable. Slow news day. Go cover a string of robberies, report it on the news, then play and “ALARM FORCE SECURITY COMMERCIAL” and boom, people go out an buy a security system, often without really thinking about it but by just letting their Limbic system control their lives. I think the challenge with just positive thinking is that without understanding how the mind work, your intentional thinking can get thwarted in many different scenarios. Personally I have had several situations in my life where I’ve looked back at a decision and did not understand how I came to it. This is not to get into the conversation of regret etc. because that is a totally different discussion, but it is to say that especially when we are impacted by major factors in our lives including depression, loneliness, and even self-deprecation, that these issues dramatically impact the brain and therefore our behavior. So while I have been a long time student of NLP, Positive Thinking, and Psychology in general, in the past five years I have made it a passion to study the brain, and I’ve personally come up with some startling revaluations, one of which is that most of us have no idea how or why the brain works. To me this is “crazy” if you’ll pardon the negative adjective. The brain takes us to where we want to go, however if we don’t know how to operate it, we’ll often end up in a different place.
So, as a quick little aside here’s one quick four minute demonstration how your Amygdala may be making decisions for you that you don’t even know it’s making. Sometime these decisions can be positive and sometimes not. It’s based on a psychology experiment from 1997 called the Bechara gambling study.
Reining in the reins of fear
Making fear disappear is not the work of a magician that goes presto. Indeed there are quite a number of ways to over come fear including hypnosis, NLP, Meditation, Coaching, therapy and more. However I believe one of the best solutions is holistic positivity, used with or without any of the other interventions. In brief, holistic positivity is really about immersion in positivity. As it invokes the law of displacement it replaces, fear, self doubt, negative thinking, negative habits and a host of other obstacles with the polar positive opposite. Just like going to the GYM, if you go once in a while it’s better than not at all, but it won’t prepare you for a tip-top body. If you want to do a triathlon, you don’t do it by going to the gym two or three times a week.
Holistic Positivity harness the power of the mind when invoked by“Meta-cognition” (the power to think about what you’re thinking” can actually rewire your brain thus rendering the old road to F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real), closed, and creating a new road connecting new neurons together to create your new focus to navigating the new road. When you’re on the new road, you have no time to be thinking about the old road. Please note **** If your fear road has been a movie playing in your mind for many years or is emotionally charged, this road is like a 4 lane expressway and it will take 10 X ( #PosiRatio ) the effort to close it and rewire it.
But it’s well worth the effort for on this new road lies the many years of your thwarted possibilities and truly your positive life. It’s right around the corner, just on the other side of the illusion you know as fear!
